Microneedling (Dermapen): The Secret to Renewed Skin
Discover how microneedling stimulates natural collagen and renews your skin. Complete indications, treatment protocol, and regenerative combinations.

Microneedling is one of the most versatile and effective treatments in regenerative aesthetic medicine. Unlike chemical peels or lasers that destroy tissue, microneedling stimulates your own skin to repair itself and produce new collagen. The result: real renewal, without aggression.
At Jenny Vera Spa, we use Dermapen technology, considered the gold standard in microneedling for its precision and efficacy. Many patients are surprised by how it transforms their skin in just a few sessions.
What is microneedling#
Microneedling is a procedure that uses ultrafine needles (between 0.5mm and 2.5mm depth, depending on need) to create controlled micro-lesions in the skin. These "tiny wounds" are deliberate: they stimulate your body's natural repair system.
Dermapen: cutting-edge technology#
Dermapen is a motorized device containing a cartridge with multiple needles (between 12 and 36 depending on the model). It vibrates rapidly while gliding across your skin, creating thousands of uniform, controlled micro-channels.
Unlike manual rollers (which are less precise), Dermapen allows you to adjust depth, speed, and coverage. That's why results are predictable and superior.
How it works biologically#
The mechanism is pure biological survival instinct:
1. Controlled creation of micro-lesions#
The needles open thousands of microscopic channels in the epidermis and dermis. Your body interprets this as a "wound" that needs repair.
2. Fibroblast activation#
Immediately, cells called fibroblasts "wake up" and begin synthesizing collagen and elastin to "close" those micro-lesions.
3. Collagen production#
For weeks after treatment, new collagen is produced. This process is called "collagenesis" and is the mechanism by which skin truly rejuvenates.
4. Progressive remodeling#
Unlike a peel that sees immediate results, microneedling provides progressive improvement for 8-12 weeks post-treatment. Your skin looks better and better.
5. Increased permeability#
The open micro-channels allow topical actives to penetrate 100-200 times deeper. That's why combining with PDRN, exosomes, or specialized serums is ideal.
What it treats (complete indications)#
Microneedling is versatile. It works well for almost all rejuvenation indications:
Fine lines and moderate wrinkles#
Probably best for fine wrinkles. The new collagen produced naturally smooths and fills.
Acne scars#
Works especially well on "ice pick" scars or depressions. New collagen fibers gradually elevate the scar.
Irregular texture and dilated pores#
By stimulating collagen, pores naturally contract and texture evens out.
Stretch marks#
Doesn't eliminate them completely, but significantly improves texture and appearance, especially recent ones.
Dark spots and discoloration#
When combined with depigmenting serums, it greatly potentiates their effect.
Post-procedure scarring#
Accelerates healing after laser, peeling, or other treatments.
Loss of firmness#
Stimulates elastin and collagen, improving overall tone.
Dull, tired-looking skin#
The natural repair process gives luminosity and vitality.
The procedure step by step#
1. Consultation and prior evaluation#
We assess your skin, specific indications, and expectations. We define needle depth (0.5mm to 2.5mm depending on the issue).
2. Preparation#
Gentle cleansing is performed. Optionally, topical anesthesia is applied (for comfort, though many feel fine without it).
3. Dermapen session#
The specialist moves the Dermapen in systematic patterns across the entire area (face, neck, décolletage, or specific area).
- Time: 20-30 minutes
- Sensation: small pricks/light scratching (tolerable)
- No significant pain
4. Post-procedure application#
Immediately after, calming serum or mask is applied. Some specialists apply PDRN or exosomes at this moment to maximize penetration.
5. Protection and care#
Mandatory sun protection and specific care instructions are provided.
Recovery and post-treatment care#
Recovery is quick but requires discipline:
First 24 hours#
- Redness (normal, like mild sun exposure)
- Possible slight swelling
- Increased sensitivity
Days 2-7#
- Redness gradually decreases
- Important: don't "pull" skin (no exfoliating)
- Intensive hydration
- Mandatory sun protection (SPF 50+)
Mandatory care#
- Avoid direct sun for at least 1 week
- Don't exfoliate for 2 weeks
- Avoid retinoids or vitamin C for 1 week (too much stimulation)
- Deep hydration: masks and calming serums
- Sun protection is non-negotiable
Optional care that enhances results#
- Apply topical PDRN on days 2-4
- Use serums with niacinamide or centella asiatica
- Take marine collagen (some studies suggest it accelerates endogenous production)
Microneedling + Exosomes or PDRN: potentiated combination#
This is where microneedling really shines. Combined with regenerative medicine:
Synergistic protocol#
- Microneedling session at appropriate depth
- Immediately after: Application of PDRN or exosomes
- Open micro-channels allow extraordinary penetration
- Synergistic effect: microneedling + biological regeneration = superior results
Why it works better combined#
- Microneedling opens "doors" in the skin
- PDRN/exosomes enter deeply and activate repair
- They potentiate each other
Many patients see more improvement in 3 combined sessions than in 8 microneedling alone.
Treatment frequency and protocol#
Active phase#
- 4 to 6 sessions spaced 4 weeks apart (to allow healing)
- Each session is cumulative
Expected improvement#
- Week 1 post-session: Redness subsides
- Weeks 2-4: Texture changes begin
- Weeks 8-12: Maximum improvement from that session
- Week 4 (next session): Continued improvement + new stimulation
Maintenance#
- 1 to 2 sessions annually to maintain results
Expected results by indication#
Fine lines#
- Improvement: 40-60% in 4-6 sessions
- Timeline: Visible in 4 weeks, optimal at 12 weeks
Mild acne scars#
- Improvement: 30-50% in depth and appearance
- Timeline: Gradual, maximum at 12-16 weeks
Texture and irregularity#
- Improvement: 50-70%
- Timeline: Visible in 2-3 sessions
Dilated pores#
- Improvement: 30-40% (don't disappear but contract)
- Timeline: Gradual, visible in 4-6 weeks
How often to do microneedling#
This is where discipline comes in. Your skin needs time to repair:
- Minimum frequency: 4 weeks between sessions
- Optimal frequency: 6-8 weeks between sessions (allows complete collagen cycle)
- Never: Less than 3 weeks (you can create cumulative damage)
Some want to do it weekly. Don't. Your skin doesn't produce collagen that fast. Patience is key.
Contraindications (when NOT to do it)#
- Active infections (herpes, bacterial)
- Severe rosacea (requires special management)
- Extremely sensitive skin (consider shallower depths)
- Keloid scarring (high risk of complication)
- Pregnancy (precaution, though not absolute contraindication)
- Recent aggressive procedures (wait minimum 2 weeks)
Why it's trending in aesthetic medicine#
1. Versatility#
Works for almost everything. One tool that solves multiple problems.
2. Safety#
When done correctly, complications are extremely rare. It's predictable.
3. Durable results#
Unlike botox, it stimulates real collagen. Changes are permanent (if you maintain skin care).
4. Complete compatibility#
Combines with any other treatment: PDRN, exosomes, HIFU, laser, etc.
5. Budget-friendly#
Compared to laser or surgery, it's cost-effective for the benefit it generates.
Conclusion: stimulated healing#
Microneedling with Dermapen is perhaps the most "natural" tool in modern aesthetic medicine. It doesn't destroy tissue (like laser), doesn't paralyze (like botox), doesn't permanently fill. It simply awakens your skin's natural healing power.
When combined with PDRN or exosomes, results are extraordinary.
If your skin suffers from scars, irregular texture, fine lines, or simply looks tired and dull, microneedling deserves to be your first attempt before more invasive procedures.
